湯かけまつりは文字どおりお湯を神輿に向けて容赦なく掛け合う祭りです。そのために用意される温泉のお湯の量は1,000樽、重さは約60トン、とっても膨大です。お湯は50～60度のアツアツでして、しばらく汲み置いていても湯気がモクモク立っています。汲んだお湯は神輿が通り掛かる頃まで放置するので、掛ける時には30～40度の気持ちの良い温度になります。次から次へとお湯を掛けられますが、担ぎ手の皆さんは笑顔ばかり。特に女性ですが湯かけで髪が乱れないよう、あらかじめ鉢巻きやバンダナで髪を押さえている人がたくさん見られますね。

祭りの始めには決まり通りに神輿へお湯を掛けているものの、その内集まった観客同士でお湯を浴びせ合う様子も増えていきます。カメラ撮影をしている人や絶対に濡れたくない人はカッパでお湯対策を講じるなど、人によって防水対策が違っているのも見ていて面白いですよ。
