岸和田だんじり祭は1703年、当時岸和田藩主であった岡部長泰が京都伏見稲荷を勧請し、五穀豊穣を願って稲荷祭を行ったことが起源とされています。祭当日になりますと、ねじり鉢巻きに真っ白な地下足袋の曳き手らが集結し、今か今かとだんじりを待ち構えます。だんじりを間近で見ますと、職人の技が光る細かく優美な彫刻が彫られていることが分かります。地区ごとにだんじりを所有しており、それぞれで異なったデザインを見ることが可能です。

さて岸和田だんじり祭の目玉はやはりだんじりの「やりまわし」でしょう。やりまわしとは1台約4トンあるだんじりの進行方向を90度変えることを指します。だんじりの上に乗っている者は大工方と呼ばれており、うちわを持ちながらだんじりの曳き手に進行方向を変えるよう指示します。

だんじり後部には後梃子が付いていて位置を変えることにより、90度進行方向を変えるやりまわしがスムーズに行われるんですね。やりまわしが行われる場所はカンカン場やらんかん橋など複数あります。観覧しやすい場所を確保して、豪快なやりまわしを目の前で観賞しましょう。破風屋根が大阪の風を颯爽と切って疾走する様子に興奮すること間違いなしですね。
