長岡まつりは1945年8月1日の長岡空襲犠牲者への鎮魂と復興と発展、恒久的な平和を願う目的で1946年8月1日に誕生しました。現在は長岡まつりと呼ばれていますが、その前身は長岡復興祭という名称です。

長岡空襲の犠牲者は1,486名にも及び、市街地の80％は焼け野原になるなど被害は深刻でした。その1年後に行われた長岡復興祭では瓦礫が撤去されておらず、未だ戦災の傷が癒えていない中で復興への大きな歩みとなりました。後に市民らの奮起により復興は大きく進みまして、1951年から現在の長岡まつりという名称となったのです。

さて前夜祭8月1日には、パレード・大民謡流し・越後長岡慰霊神輿渡御が行われます。

大民謡流しは5,000人を超える踊り手が集結する行事で、長岡地元企業や民謡サークルが参加します。8時頃から自由参加OKとなりますので、踊り手と一緒に長岡甚句を踊りながら喜びを分かち合いましょう。

越後長岡慰霊神輿渡御は御揃いの法被を纏った担ぎ手らが威勢良く街中を練り歩きます。一見軽そうに持ち上げていますが、重さは数百キロを超えるほど。掛け声を合わせながら一歩ずつ進むと一体感が感じられ、不思議と疲労感が感じられず力が湧きあがってきます。中には担ぎ手を募集している神輿渡御もありますので、ぜひ外部から参加してみたいという方は長岡市に問い合わせをしてみてください。神輿の担ぎ方が分からなくとも、地元参加者が優しく教えてくれますから心配は不要。この他に関連行事として柿川灯籠流しなどが行われます。

そして8月2日と3日は昼行事と待ちに待った大花火大会が行われます。大輪の花火は雄大かつ優美で、打ちあがる度に観客から歓声が上がります。公式ウェブサイトには花火の名称が紹介されており、花火に込められた願いやイメージが分かるようになっています。ナイアガラ・スターマイン・フェニックスの美しさは、素敵な一夏の思い出になるでしょう。

また長岡駅前には長岡戦災資料館がありまして、空襲の様子が分かる資料が多数展示されています。ぜひこちらへも足を運び、戦争の悲惨さや平和の尊さを感じてみてくださいね。
