さて茅ヶ崎海岸浜降祭は鶴嶺八幡社・鶴嶺地区・茅ヶ崎地区・寒川地区・南湖地区の総勢34社参加の圧倒的な禊が見られる祭りです。禊は午前4時からと非常に早いのが特徴で、見物客の中には寝ぼけ眼を擦りながら訪れる方もいらっしゃいます。神輿が出される宮出しに関してはさらに早く、草木も眠る丑三つ時の午前2時頃から行われます。このように茅ヶ崎海岸浜降祭は深夜早朝からスタートする珍しい祭りなのです。宮出しが行われたら、神輿はめいめいに禊の地である西浜海岸を目指します。大体午前4時頃になりますと西浜海岸は大勢の神輿が集結し、担ぎ手らが今か今かと禊の時を待つのです。朝日が昇る頃には神饌の儀を受けた神輿らの禊が始まります。

禊では神輿を担いだ氏子がためらうことなく西浜海岸から海の中へ歩んでいきます。水深が深い場所までは進まないものの、それでも氏子の膝くらいまでは波が押し寄せるので、波飛沫が神輿に掛かっています。海水で神輿が傷まないか心配になるかもしれません。ですがこれこそが茅ヶ崎海岸浜降祭の醍醐味なのです。禊では担ぎ手らが懸命に「どっこいどっこい！」と掛け声を上げるのですが、時折茅ヶ崎甚句が聞こえることもありますのでぜひ耳を澄ましてみてくださいね。
