祭り初日には八坂神社神輿の渡御や山車屋台の曳き廻しが行われ、にぎやかな幕開けとなります。町内連合神輿のパレードは沿道に水を携えた人がわらわら集まり始めるのですが、神輿が近付いた頃を見計らってバシャッと氏子へと容赦なく水を浴びせます。深谷市は毎年気温が猛暑を記録する地であることから始まった風習です。水を浴びますと氏子の火照りがスッキリ解消され、炎天下でも元気に渡御が行えるとのことです。

それから神輿渡御は昼と夜でルートが異なりますので注意しましょう。神輿渡御が行われる駅通り周辺では、山車屋台、ソーラン踊り、居囃子が披露されるのですが、移動距離を抑えた区域にて出し物の観賞ができるよう工夫がなされています。ですから出し物見物のハシゴがスムーズに行えるんですね。
